
Charles II 1660-1685
Having narrowly avoidiing capture at the end of Civil War, he spent nearly a decade in exile before Parliament invited him to retun int he wake of the vacuum left by Cromwell's death. Charles had to deal with the Plague and the Great Fire.
James II 1685-1688

Sharing the failings of his father, Chalres I, he alienated opinion through his Catholic loyalties. In 1688 , Anglicans invited Protestant Prince William of Orange - married to James's daughter Mary - to Britain, at the head of an army. James fled.
* Supporters pushed the 'Jacobite' cause well into the 18th Century.
